Locking in safety for the Royal Australian Navy

3 MINUTE READ

Repairing and servicing the Navy’s assets can be dangerous work. We’re finding new ways to deal with the risks posed by on-board electrical systems, to better protect the people charged with keeping our fleet operational.

THE PROJECT

The RAN Isolation Project is a multi-faceted improvement project aimed at improving safety outcomes and efficiency in isolating sources of energy when completing work on Australian warships, submarines and aircraft.

WHO WE’RE WORKING WITH

In this project Secora has worked with Navy, CASG, Maintenance Contractors, Defence Engineering & Policy Departments.

THE CHALLENGE

We worked across a range of roles in the project and for a number of different clients. We began by reviewing the current isolation practices and performance, and making recommendations to bring them into line with legislation and industrial best practice.

Following this report, a working group was convened by Navy to address the improvement opportunities. Secora has ongoing involvement in this group, which has concentrated on two key aspects:

  • Procedural Improvement

  • Isolation Data Management.

Procedural Improvement focussed on refining the Navy isolation process taking into account the requirements of externally contracted maintenance, daily routine maintenance and emergent work.

Isolation Data Management involved creating validated configuration data for each vessel in the fleet, to provide a reference source for isolation points and sequence.

The project has developed to include the following aspects:

  • Software Needs Analysis, Market Assessment and Review

  • Digitisation of the Isolation Data Capture and Validation process

  • Development of digital solutions for the creation of isolation sequencing

  • Project Management

  • Communications & Change Management

  • Data  Extraction and Maintenance Routine Updates.

“This work is saving lives.
It’s as simple as that.”

— RAN officer, HMAS Leeuwin
